St Helens
On the banks of the canal lies St Helens most impressive building – The World of Glass. Purpose built to house the Pilkington glass collection. Walk through the cone and shout at the roof to fully appreciate its acoustic properties. The Visitor experience is full of incredible pieces of glass, each telling a story from a time in history. Artifacts from Ancient Egypt, through to medieval and up to studio glass from some of the world’s greatest glass makers today.
Enjoy a glass blowing demonstration by a resident artist, followed by a three-screen film show with light effects explaining the science of glass. Enjoy a bite to eat in the garden café which sells a selection of meals, snacks and delicious cakes. Visit the regularly changing exhibitions in three art galleries. The World of Glass has the largest exhibiting space in the town and surrounding areas, and you will always find something to inspire and challenge.
Finally explore the story of Industrial Revolution through the town collection and artefacts from glass, mining, ironworks and pharmaceuticals. Visit Pilkington’s first regenerative furnace and the tunnels beneath. Finish the visit with a look around the gift shop showcasing spectacular glass in every colour way possible. You will also find some beautifully crafted gifts made my local crafters. It’s a great day out a very reasonable price.
