Salisbury Museum and Wiltshire Museum both provide an excellent insight into the rich heritage our county has to offer. At the Wiltshire Museum you will find items from the prehistoric landscapes of Avebury and Stonehenge as well as the best Bronze Age collection in the country. Salisbury Museum is the place to visit to admire the much acclaimed Stonehenge Gallery and the recently discovered Amesbury Archer. Amesbury Museum provides a personal tour of one of the greatest Mesolithic collections in the county and describes the story of why Stonehenge is where it is.

In addition to these great venues, many of Wiltshire's towns have museums and galleries which provide a fascinating insight into many other aspects of the county's local history. The Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre tells the story of the historic market town from prehistoric times until the present day, whilst Trowbridge Museum gives an insight into the woollen industry that grew the town. The Town Hall Museum in Royal Wootton Bassett houses many local artefacts, as does The Swindon Museum and Art Gallery has displays of local history, archaeology and geology.

For those with an interest in military history then a visit to the Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum is a 'must do'. On display are 2,000 objects dating from 1748 through to the current regiment. Likewise, the REME Museum with its collection of armoured tanks, historic weapons to interactive displays offers chance to learn about the role and history of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, the corps of the British Army responsible for the maintenance, servicing and inspection of electrical and mechanical equipment.

Transport enthusiasts have plenty of options to choose from with STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon, the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection on the outskirts of Salisbury plus the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum in Calne.

For those with an interest in photography, the Fox Talbot Museum of Photography within the National Trust Village of Lacock is where you can learn about the history of photography and photographic developments.
