Yorkshire

Yorkshire, the UK's biggest county, is renowned and celebrated for many things, from lush land-scapes of coast and country, World Heritage Sites to ruined castles and abbeys, great gardens, historic houses and castles, to its vast historic industrial heritage.

Add to that list museums and galleries which provide a fascinating insight and exploration into Yorkshire life, history and art, culture both past and present.

And there is so much to explore when you consider Yorkshire can be split into four distinct areas - North, West, South, and East Yorkshire.

Home to six national museums, Yorkshire enjoys a range of other unique and awardwinning collections covering a whole host of eras and topics, everything from taking a trip through Viking village life and Victorian industry to venturing into a nuclear bunker.

Yorkshire's creative spirit can also be best demonstrated and enjoyed at across a diverse range of art galleries and craft centres.

Whilst in Leeds take a visit to see the Thackray Museum of Medicine (Image above) where you will find imaginative and exciting galleries from the history of healthcare.

Yorkshire Wolds Gallery & Coffee Shop is a contemporary art gallery on the Yorkshire Wolds, with a changing program of exhibitions throughout the year showcasing the work of Yorkshire Artists. In the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, World of James Herriot in Thirsk explores the home and surgery of James Herriot, with the centre housing a unique tribute to the vet-come-author Alf Wight.

No trip to South Yorkshire is complete without visiting Barnsley where you will find the beautiful Cannon Hall. The outdoor space of Cannon Hall was created with the same love and passion as the Spencer Stanhope family invested in the Hall.

Where every inch was meticulously planned and executed to create a truly spectacular landscape.

The natural habitats that exist in the historic landscape have always been of huge importance and an integral part of the outside space. See hundreds of varieties of plants, trees, flowers and a nationally recognised collection of fruit as well as an abundance of magnificent greenery.
