Canwood Gallery
Canwood Gallery is a contemporary art gallery and sculpture park set within 10 acres of outstanding natural beauty nestled deep within the Herefordshire countryside. Its story begins in the 1970s, when Herefordshire farmer Stephen Dale faced a life-threatening battle with leukaemia.
During treatment at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, he found solace and inspiration in the Tate Gallery, particularly in Carl Andre's controversial brick installation. It wasn't just the work itself, but the questions it raised, what is art, who decides, and why it matters.
That moment stayed with him. Years later, on retirement, Stephen founded Canwood Gallery, creating a place where art could be shared, experienced, and explored by others for free. A place not just to view art, but to feel its impact, to question, and to connect.
Today, visitors often arrive expecting a small rural gallery, but discover something far more expansive. Sculpture unfolds across the landscape, from striking large-scale works to smaller, collectible pieces that invite closer connection.
Inside, the gallery presents a rolling programme of monthly exhibitions alongside a carefully curated permanent collection alongside guest artists. The focus is simple, to show work that engages, challenges, and stays with you. You are free to explore at your own pace. Walk the sculpture park, spend time with the work, or simply enjoy the calm of the setting. An on-site café allows you to pause and extend your visit, with picnics also available to order, perfect for enjoying the landscape.
